Kia Ora !*FIRSTNAME*!,

Well to those that were once again involved in TRENZ – a huge thanks for your efforts to make our town really stand up and be noticed.  We did it again and no doubt Auckland will have their work cut out for them next year!!  Dates for TRENZ next year are located in the “Dates for the Diary” section at the bottom of this newsletter.

During TRENZ I met Emma Thompson from Expedia.  She has asked me to advise all our accommodation providers that they are always looking for new listings and if you’d like to find out more and register your interest, please visit their site on expedia.co.nz and select Hotel Sign up at the bottom of the page.

A reminder too that Marketing Collateral Contracts need to be in by now.  We are about to go out with the specifications for the Product Directory so please check to see that you have returned your form as well as your Expression of Interest on any activity we are undertaking during the year that you may like to be involved with.  This includes domestic, overseas roadshows and Australian activity. To view the 2008/2009 Marketing Prospectus, click here.

Keep an eye on Tourism New Zealand’s events pages which has updated information on trade events coming up offshore and for famils to New Zealand.  Here’s the link and I encourage you to visit both the International Media Teams (Auckland) and Operations Teams (Wellington) whenever you are there to ensure both these key areas have the most up to date information on your product.

Hayley leaves us this Friday and I’d like to acknowledge the outstanding efforts she has made in the domestic and events arena during the 14 months she has been with us.  We have had TV advertisements running, billboards, print adverts, attending Big Boys Toys consumer show as well as managing the AA Campaign and event activity.  Hayley you’ve been a star and you’ll be missed. We’re currently interviewing for Hayley’s replacement.

Please keep in touch with the office and keep us up to date of your activity.

Kind regards
Ruth Crampton

Marketing Plan

The first draft of the Marketing Plan is now complete and will be submitted to the Rotorua Tourism Board for review.  Our strategy this year is very focussed on Domestic and Australian activity, and we have increased the budgets in those areas accordingly.
We have again put together a media schedule for domestic activity incorporate C & I, Events and domestic leisure.  You are welcome to have a copy of that and place your domestic activity to complement the spend that we are already undertaking.  We are also always looking for domestic partners so hopefully you’ve indicated this in the Expression of Interest form you will have returned with your Marketing Collateral contracts.  If not, drop us a line and we’ll be in touch about the opportunities.
If you’d like a copy of the plan when it’s finalised, please email .

International Activity

Rotorua has recently hosted over 15 Air New Zealand International Concierges.  As part of a world first initiative Air Zealand has introduced concierges on all their international flights who are knowledgeable in local product.  The famils focus on the cultural, geothermal and luxury side of Rotorua.  All participants absolutely loved the city and the people and were “shocked” (pleasantly) at what we have to offer! This can only bode well for the future.

Rotorua has also advertised in the Australia / New Zealand magazine which is released in the UK. Our aim is to try and increase visitor awareness of Rotorua as a place to visit during their summer vacations. Using the “Challenge your Spirit” format, we hope to entice and educate UK readers about the Rotorua’s adventurous nature and the opportunities that we have for people wanting a get out and challenge themselves.   The advertisement accompanies four pages of editorial and stunning imagery which is part of a pull out supplement accompanying the bi monthly magazine.

Rotorua has also been very active in Australia over the previous few months, attending both the Sydney and Melbourne consumer Travel expos. This was in conjunction with industry, each show had an average attendance of over 10000 and was great exposure direct to the consumer for our destination, really raising peoples knowledge about Rotorua and changing perceptions about what we have to offer.

Haydn attended the annual RTO – IBO Day last month. This event was a great way to update the IBOs on the new developments in the Rotorua region.  This will be followed up by an email newsletter and then sales calls in September.
Planning is now underway to undertake another What’s On Spring promotion in Australia in conjunction with Tourism NZ.

Destination Rotorua along with Tamaki Tours, Hells Gate and Agrodome will be in Australia at the end of June to undertake Frontliner Training as well as Agency Training nights. Ruth will visit Marketing staff to ascertain opportunities with the trade for the coming months.

Explore New Zealand

Tourism New Zealand’s Explore New Zealand publication is a discount programme that enables accredited travel agents and media from our key international markets to expand their experience of tourism product whilst travelling independently  in New Zealand.  By providing industry rate discounts, New Zealand tourism companies increase travel trade knowledge of their product and may receive international media coverage.
The Expore New Zealand 2009/2010 issue will be printed later this year.  Online applications to be a part of the next edition will be accepted online at tourismnewzealand.com from 01 July to mid August 2008.

Kia Ora Campaign

Rotorua is going to lead the way by embracing “Kia Ora” as the official way to greet all visitors to our city.  This is a community initiative that will be lead by our Mayor and supported by key organisations to ensure all sectors play their part.  Only three easy steps are required:

  1. Personalise your communication tools (email, phone, mobile, website) to “Kia Ora”
  2. Inform your reception and front line staff to say “Kia Ora” when guests arrive; and
  3. Incorporate “Kia Ora” on any promotional collateral

Let’s do it and become New Zealand’s most friendly and welcoming region.
For more information contact Destination Rotorua Tourism Board.

C & I Update

Melissa under took a very successful trip to Australia where she attended Australian Events on Sale and undertook product updates in Melbourne alongside Destination Lake Taupo.    We have decided that this will certainly be attended again next year and that we will start to increase our in market activity over the coming 12 months.

A site inspection was held for the organiser of a 600 pax Singaporean incentive due here in November.

Three bids are currently on the go and we met with CINZ regarding the Conference Assistance Programme to see what opportunities exist for Rotorua to be included in international bids that they are undertaking.  Plans are in place for some local promotion to see what potential conferences may be available to us by using local experts.

Meetings planning continues for the end of July.
