Kia Ora !*FIRSTNAME*!,

Welcome to 2009!!  What a great initiative the Eat Streat complex has been. Very satisfying to see town buzzing and hopefully the restaurants in town are all benefiting from this.  There is also a schedule of entertainment that Eat Streat are putting on weekly and we will upload that to our Dining page on rotoruanz.com if you’d like to check that out for guests wanting to find something to do in the evening.

Towards the end of January the Tourism NZ “Have Your Say” Mobile film studio will be in town.  The purpose of this 17m long truck is to invite tourists to talk openly on camera about their New Zealand experience. This in turn is used to promote NZ in their offshore marketing efforts.  It’s seen as a cost effective / word of mouth option to market New Zealand.    Keep an eye out for it at the Lakefront, Skyline Skyrides, Te Puia and Agroventures.

Reminders too that the GNZTR Product Manual advertising has closed off. This publication will now be used as our key trade printed piece alongside our revamped trade site due for completion in April.  Contact if you would like more information.

And finally an update on leave coming up from this office.  Don will be away for the month of February on annual leave.  Jill will be away for the first three weeks of February.  Melissa’s last day before she heads away to get married is 27th Feb.  She will return to work as Mrs Clarke on 23 March.  So bear with us in February, we’ll be a little stretched.

Please chat to us if you have any great ideas for marketing the destination and if there is anything at all you want to know about what we have planned for the year ahead.

Kind regards

UK Promotion

Air New Zealand is working with American Express to target UK premium leisure cardholders during Jan/Feb. The intended communication will be via the AMEX magazine, distribution 72,000 and a direct mail drop to approx 45,000 people, targeted by behaviour and travel habits to select the most suited to New Zealand. Air New Zealand is putting together an exclusive Premium Economy fare with two free domestic flights whilst in New Zealand, to encourage people to see and do more once they arrive. The travel period will be for Feb-June 2009. Previous work done by Air New Zealand in a similar fashion has resulted in a 3% uptake, so potentially this will see approximately 3,000 new bookings to New Zealand.
The basis of the communication in the magazine and direct mail piece will be along the lines of do more whilst in New Zealand and make use of the free flights to do this.
Rotorua is participating in this voucher booklet and have included 8 products as value adds for the destination.

Wotif.com opportunities

Ongoing discussions with Wotif continue to offer great opportunities for promoting Rotorua via their networks.  An autumn promotion is proposed around the next TV Commercial schedule for March which includes a prize giveaway, destinational landing page and hotel offers.

Additionally wotif are now adding Points of Interest to their location maps on their site.  Currently a hotel icon shows up on the map and when you scroll over it the details of that property show up.  With the points of interest, you can register your activity with Wotif and in return for a link from your site to theirs, they can offer this free.  Alternatively, there is an annual fee.

For more information about listing your activity on the wotif site, contact who will send you the information and you can then liaise with the wotif team directly.

Please note this is for activities only.

Helping you promote Rotorua

As an initiative to help sell Rotorua and encourage more visitors to the region for longer we have developed a one page insertion for all Rotorua operators to upload to their webpage.  The page features maps, a general description of the Rotorua region, images and a number of highlights. We believe this will be very beneficial in encouraging visitors to Rotorua for longer stays. If everybody supports this initiative we will all benefit.

The HTML code will be forwarded to all operators by the end of January. If you have any views on this please email James at

We will also be forwarding all businesses a brief 2 minute PowerPoint presentation. This can be inserted in your own trade presentations for educating on the region. Once again, if we all continue to promote the region as well as our own businesses we will gradually make all our tourism partners aware of the immense diversity here and need for at least 3 nights. If we all work together on this one, we will all increase our share of business.

The planner launch in Auckland has been postponed until later in the year.

Famils – There are several famils coming up over the next couple of months which is great and we have positive responses from several from late last year, which is great to see.

AIME – Both Ruth and Melissa are heading to AIME next month and the dates for 2010 have been released with AIME moving to April due to Chinese New Year.

Agent Familiarisations

There have been no agent familiarisations over the Christmas and New Year period.

Media Update

There’s plenty happening on the editorial front over the next few weeks, with Rotorua features set to appear in the NZ Herald, On Board (Interislander magazine), Destinations magazine and Arrival magazine.

The famil scene is getting busy, with several media groups from several markets visiting during February. Please contact Justine for further details.

Some members of the TNZ media team visited Rotorua on self-famils of Rotorua over the past month. We look forward to hosting more of them down here. Any operators wanting to be considered for these famils should register their interest with Justine. Phone (07) 349 7286 or email

For any operators sending out press releases, please ensure Justine is on your distribution list. Justine can forward these releases to media on our database and add them to the news section on our website to maximise coverage.
