Rotorua Fishing Update

Lakes Tarawera and Rotoiti have fished consistently well to methods targeting fish at depth such as wire and jigging and are beginning to improve for shallow trollers also. Shore based spin and fly fishers have also reported good catches with Tarawera’s Rangiuru Bay standing out as a recent hot spot.
Lake Rotorua has cooled 3-4 degrees Celsius over the last few weeks so the fish that were congregated at the cooler stream mouths are now beginning to spread around the lake. The traditional runs around the airport and Parkcliff towards to Ohau are producing some nice condition fish. Expect rainbows to be abundant in the North West sector later into May and June as they feed prior to ascending the Ngongotaha and Waiteti streams.
For the smaller boat or kayak enthusiast, lakes Okaro, Rotoma and Ngapouri are on the improve with fish taken trolling and spinning. Rerewhakaaitu has been quite slow, especially from the shore but improving and the fish size and condition appear excellent again.
