Kia Ora !*FIRSTNAME*!,

It’s been another busy month for the team at DRTM, and it’s great to see the visitor statistics turning into positive territory. The last four weeks have been crammed with conferences, workshops, trade and media famils and as Summer approaches and we build up to the Rugby World Cup 2011, things can only get busier…fantastic.

Media Advisor

We are pleased to announce our new media advisor, Jane Hope, will start in this role at DRTM on October 11. Jane’s skills are varied and naturally she is adept in writing and communication. We welcome Jane to the team.

Rugby World Cup 2011

We are now counting down from one year to go until the commencement of Rugby World Cup 2011. This is the world’s third largest sporting event. Industry across the board is gearing up to receive an expected 80,000 plus visitors.

Rotorua and Central Park were showcased at the Giant Rugby Ball on Sydney’s Circular Quay this month, by a contingent of Rotorua Tourism and Business representatives, to invited groups from the Australian Tourism and Business sectors, followed by a very successful networking session. Using the leverage of RWC2011 new links for trans-Tasman trade and tourism opportunities have been established.

Rotorua will host one Pool C match, Ireland v Russia, Sunday September 25, and two Pool D matches, Fiji v Namibia, Saturday September 10 and Samoa v Namibia, Wednesday September 14.

Visit www.rugbyworldcup.com for more.

New Zealand will celebrate its role as host of one of the world’s greatest sports events by staging a nationwide festival promoting real New Zealand to the world. The REAL New Zealand Festival will run from 9 September – 23 October, and will complement the match and team hosting schedule for RWC2011. Several events are already planned for Rotorua with more yet to be added.

Marie Claire – India

Rotorua was chosen by the fashion editors of top fashion magazine, Marie Claire (India) as the perfect location for a 12 page wedding fashion feature. The team from India, were awestruck by the scenic beauty of Rotorua and the variety of locations. They arrived with Polish model, Maria Debicka who was equally captivated by Rotorua’s charm. Locations included Te Puia, Wai-O-Tapu, TreeTops Lodge, and Mt Ngongotaha courtesy of Skyline. A Volcanic Air Safaries float plane was used as a prop for the shoot at Lake Tarawera. The crew were hosted by TNZ and DRTM and stayed at the Novotel Rotorua Lakeside.  Although the shoot was ‘full on’ Fashion Editor, Pearl Shah managed to somehow fit in a treatment at Polynesian Spa and the crew spun some wheels at Quadzone. Many thanks to everyone who helped make this such a success.

Pictured are Pearl Shah – Fashion Editor, Nikhil Dudani – Style Editor, Charudutt Chitrak – Photographer, Daniel Bauer – Hair & Make-up, Maria Debicka – Model, Kimberley Wallace – TNZ Escort and Richard Fulton – Wai-O-Tapu.

International Update

Australia

August saw DRTM extremely active and Rotorua’s market presence is certainly being felt.

DRTM was represented on the Kirra roadshow which visited 5 Australian centres. Adelaide, Melbourne, Newcastle, Brisbane and Coff Harbour. Over 2000 potential travelers attended the events with a huge interest in Rotorua. There were queues of people lining up to receive Rotorua information and ask questions for there holidays.

DRTM was also represented on the Grand Pacific Roadshow which attended 6 cities – Canberra, Melbourne, Adelaide, Coffs Harbour, Sydney and Brisbane. In total 654 potential travelers visited to learn about New Zealand as a holiday destination.

DRTM also attended a function for key Australian wholesale partners in the giant Rugby ball in Sydney. Approx 60 key travel company staff were in attendance to watch the Tri Nations Fixture.

A big thanks to Joey Rihari who did an excellent job representing Rotorua at the above 3 events.

Marketing Activity

While most Australian Wholesalers report the market now to be ‘as flat as a tack’ Rotorua has some exciting campaign work underway with a major Australian wholesaler.

ANZCRO campaign

DRTM has partnered with Australian wholesaler ANZCRO for a comprehensive marketing campaign in Australia through strategic retail travel agency groups. This campaign is for travel from Early September through to the end of the year and will run till the end of October.

This campaign will focus on heavy promotion across all Flight Centre retail brands and Jetset and Travelworld retail outlets.

Activity Highlights:

  • 1 page Rotorua feature in 310,000 Flight Centre Catalogues
  • 1 Page Rotorua feature in 100,000 Escape Travel Catalogues
  • 1 page Rotorua feature in 30,000 Jetset Catalogues
  • 1 page Rotorua feature in 25,000 Travelworld
  • Window banners in 700 Flight Centre stores nationally in October
  • Window banners in 104 Escape Travel stores nationally in Australia
  • Press advertising in weekend papers in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth
  • Feature on Escape Travel homepage in October with 360,000 unique visitors per month
  • 5 distributions of Rotorua feature to AFTA database of 30,000 travel agents
  • Incentive in place for ANZCRO reservation staff
  • Incentive in place for Flight Centre staff nationally who sell 3 nights in Rotorua in any one booking.

While the measurable return on the investment in this campaign will be through actual conversions through ANZCRO reservations this campaign is also high value generic advertising for Rotorua targeted straight to the potential traveler creating greater awareness and desire to travel to Rotorua regardless of the booking channel.

VALUE TOURS

In August inserted into the Value Tours new season brochure was a 6 page glossy A4 Rotorua feature. Along with basic Rotorua information and logistics the feature showcased the array of activities and experiences through inspiring imagery and itinerary options. It was inserted into 10,000 brochures.

WOTIF

Wotif in Australia is launching their new online service Wotflight. As part of the launch DRTM has agreed to being part of the launch campaign which will see Rotorua as a feature destination through the launch period. Part of this will involve a holiday giveaway to Rotorua, traffic redirection to a customised rotoruanz.com landing page and database mail outs.

Asia

In Early October DRTM will be represented at Kiwilink Asia in Singapore. The event will see key travel staff from across Asia converge on Singapore for 3 days.

If you have product updates suited to any of the Asian markets please email these updates through to .  All product updates will form part of an update presentation to knowledgeable attendees wanting the latest news out of the region.

Japan

DRTM recently completed a market visit to Japan visiting 18 Japanese wholesale offices and attending 2 official functions. Our visit was extremely well received. With visitor arrival to New Zealand back in positive territory the mood from Japanese wholesalers was positive as they put the challenges they have faced behind them and move forward. One major Japanese wholesaler reported a 240% increase in business over last year.

As on our visit last year we presented a Rotorua with a wide variety of activity nicely portrayed in Eco-Tourism, Culture and Adventure categories. Weeks previously DRTM had hosted 9 Japanese IBO’s to Rotorua to experience these themes. This has been well received and since our last visit in 2009 some wholesalers have included additional optional nights and activities centered around this theme. It was also encouraging to see as was Rotorua’s ‘Most beautiful City award’ being featured in brochures after informing them last year of this success.

While the visit presented a few challenges Rotorua faces with the Japanese market it also presented some fantastic opportunities. Power Spots (google it) are a bit of a craze in Japan at the moment and Rotorua is seen as possessing the elements to make it an ideal powerspot destination. Some wholesalers expressed interest in marketing power spot itineraries with Rotorua as the major drawcard. This is an opportunity we will pursue. Also encouraging was the number of experimental itineraries that some companies had in the marketplace. While not all will be best sellers it is great to see plenty of creativity in the market.

Famils

We continue to push for as many familiarization visits out of Australia at possible. To date we have now organized in excess of 200 Australian travel Agents and key travel industry staff to visit Rotorua this year. Thank you for your continuing support.

To be able to afford to do this we generally work with key wholesale companies who we essentially partner up with to manage the costs of bringing the staff across.

Australian Wholesale Famil: 4th – 7th September
Flight Centre Sydney: 17th – 19th September
China Semi FIT famil 14th – 16th September

Multi Media Survey
A survey has just been completed which included NZ and Australian PCO and Event organizers. The results are due for review at the end of this week and will be available for viewing within the next two weeks. The survey was to get feedback on the online resources we provide to meetings, events and incentive planning partners. An additional incentive to complete the survey was to offer the chance to win a flip HD video camera.

Convention Activity Survey (CAS)
Rotorua is one of ten participating regions in the NZ Convention Activity Survey (CAS).  Effective July last year the survey was upgraded to provide data on a wider range of C&I events than conferences alone and now also includes meeting/seminars, incentive activities, conference/conventions, trade show/exhibitions and special occasions.  The report for the quarter ending June 2010 is now available and also includes data for the first full year since the survey was upgraded.  Key points specific to Rotorua for year ending 30 June 2010 are:

  • Rotorua has a 6% share of multi-day MICE events held in CAS regions - comparable to Queenstown (also 6% share) and exceeded only by large metropolitan regions (Auckland 36% share, Wellington 22% share and Canterbury 13% share).
  • Rotorua has a 7% share of delegates attending multi-day MICE events in CAS regions - comparable to Manawatu (also 7% share) and exceeded only by Auckland 33% share, Wellington 23% share and Canterbury 15% share.
  • Rotorua has an 8% share of delegate days spent at multi-day MICE events in CAS regions - again, exceeded only by Auckland 30%, Wellington 20% and Canterbury 19%.

Australia

Familiarization
At the end of August, ten Australian PCOs and Event Managers were hosted on a four day familiarization  to Rotorua utilising the direct flights from Sydney. The itinerary began with the Wearable Arts Awards dinner at the Energy Events Centre hosted by the Convention Bureau and Events and Venues. For the duration of the trip clients were shown a wide range of conference and incentive products including accommodation, offsite dinner venues and a selection of activities. At the end of the four days the clients  had a good feel for Rotorua,  our culture, our facilities, our people and as an event destination. Feedback has been incredible with suppliers/operators being rated highly for their products and the PCOs and Event Managers all saying their expectations were exceeded.  Here are just a few comments:

'I think Rotorua is a fantastic conference/incentive destination. There is a lot of choice with regards to accommodation, conference, offsite, restaurant options and the added bonus of gaining a cultural experience as well as some extreme sports activities means that Rotorua is a destination that ticks all the boxes.'

'Rotorua is a well placed and exciting destination with so much to offer conference and incentive guests. New Zealand is so accessible for Australian visitor’s, however I believe the direct flights to Rotorua have put this incredible place on    the map for conference business from Australia.'

'Rotorua is a very unique and fresh conference/incentive destination. You can expect stellar service and hospitality, a great selection of food & beverage options and both onsite /offsite catering. There is a great combination of sporting adventures/team building activities with fantastic venues that have sterling views over countryside. With conference facilities that range from in-house (hotel) meeting rooms to huge state-of-the-art venues, Rotorua has delegate’s interests at heart with the amount of choice at their fingertips.'

Activity
Debbie has been busy attending several networking functions including the Australian Famil club and MEA (Meetings Events Association) cocktail function. Rotorua was also invited to be part of the Autism Spectrum Australia comedy evening, where we put a package up for auction which included return flights for two on the direct. This package caused quiet a stir raising the most money on the night. Debbie represented the destination on the evening at the Focus NZ table.
10th September, Rotorua hosted MICE clients to the Game of two Halves Cocktail function in conjunction with Tourism NZ Rugby Ball at Darling Harbour.

Verbal confirmation has been received for two pieces of business from Australia this month. These are in their final stages of negotiations and will be sent out to the appropriate operators once in writing. The business is for March 2011 and September 2012.
Another piece of business is in its final stages which are a combination of Australia and NZ delegates; this too is coming to Rotorua in early 2011 but is pending a familiarization in early October.

New Zealand

Familiarization
At the time of print last month we had just come off the back of a NZ PCO and Event organizers familiarization. Some of the feedback from those guests:

‘I was highly impressed with Rotorua, I had no idea what it had to offer as a conference and incentive destination and am very excited about holding our annual conference there in 2012.’

‘Now… Absolutely fantastic and I have convinced my clients to secure as our 2011 Nth Island destination.’

‘Great! I think initially people may think, oh Rotorua, been there done that, but I was really impressed with the amount of activities to do, place’s to dine, things to see …. Etc!’

Activity
With only 12 months to go before the Rugby World Cup, we have found ourselves assisting where possible to ensure that clients with special interest large groups are getting all the right information to make their decisions.
Melissa has also been working in collecting and updating our large database. This is to assist with making contact with the corporate market and for future familiarizations to ensure that the client is getting to meet with the right operators for their business requirements. Part of this ongoing project includes sales calls in Auckland the week of 20th September to the corporate market.

Google Analytics (GA) is a FREE service offered by Google that generates detailed statistics about the visitors to a website. Its main highlight is that the product is aimed at marketers as opposed to webmasters and technologists from which the industry of web analytics originally grew. All it takes to get up and running is a snippit of code that you put on every page of your website.

Technical topics covered included:

  • Setting up separate profiles for each website for filtering reports
  • Goals and interaction
  • Segmentation measurements to help report on engagement (via time on site and pageviews) and interation by the number of goals completed

NZ Freedom Camping Forum

The New Zealand Freedom Camping Forum was established three years ago to assist visitors in better understanding the variance in regional freedom camping policies and alleviate freedom camping pressures on local communities.

Education is the primary tool of the forum, where responsible freedom camping messages are communicated to motorhome/campervan visitors.  The responsible freedom camping message is simply ‘Where can I camp?’ and directs motorhome visitors to consult the camping.org.nz website, local i-SITE, Department of Conservation office, and/or a Holiday Park Association NZ member.

Motorhome visitors to the Rotorua district are encouraged to plan their visit to the district by first visiting the motorhome visitor specific page of rotoruaNZ.com, which states the local freedom camping policy and gives an overview of motorhome facilities in the district.

Upon arrival in the district, visitors can collect a motorhome visitor brochure, which has more detailed information and has a map showing the specific location of all motorhome facilities, holiday parks and camping grounds in the district.

Rotorua businesses wanting to distribute the Rotorua motorhome brochure to visitors can contact Gina for a supply of brochures – phone (07) 349 7289 or email .

Ecotourism NZ Conference 2010 Rotorua

Co-hosted by Greymouth-based Tai Poutini Polytechnic and Waiariki Institute of Technology, this year’s the Ecotourism NZ conference was held in the North Island for the first time.  Keynote speaker Robert Swan enthralled the attendees with his ‘madness’.  At the age of 21 years old he had never been camping, but set a goal of walking to the South Pole.  Over the next 30 years Robert raised millions of dollars to fund such ‘mad’ missions in an effort to bring public awareness to various environmental issues.  Seven Rotorua attraction and activity businesses (all members of the Rotorua Sustainable Tourism Charter) got to showcase their pursuit of sustainability as the providers of the delegate field trips that made up two half days of the conference program.  The Rotorua Sustainable Tourism Charter was the topic of one of four breakout sessions.  Presented by Eldad Collins (the Charter’s Sustainability Advisor) the breakout session gave an overview of the Charter’s grass roots approach to sustainability that has been collectively developed by the membership.  Co-hosting the Charter session was Charter member, Steve Osborne of Alpin Motel who presented a case study of a successful down-bore heat exchange system which almost eliminates the business’ carbon emissions associated with space and water heating.
