Kia Ora !*FIRSTNAME*!,

In the wind up to the busy summer season work continues at DRTM on the activities that will roll out early in the New Year.

Several media groups are due to visit Rotorua through January, including some from the UK, China and Germany. There will also be a large international media contingent here covering the Eves Realty Multisport Festival (29-30 Jan) due to confirmation that several high profile athletes will compete; great exposure for the event and wider Rotorua.

Tourism New Zealand will launch a new campaign in Australia in mid-January, and the Rotorua and Central Park TNZ/Joint Venture campaigns will follow, commencing late February and running through to May. Both campaigns are currently in production.

We look forward to the ongoing success of the Rotorua – Sydney direct air link, which this month celebrates its first year of operation.

Development of the new-look Rotorua website, announced at the last industry forum, continues. We aim to launch the improved site in the second quarter of 2011.

Also in the New Year activity will continue to build towards Rugby World Cup 2011 and the supporting events of the associated Real New Zealand Festival.

From the team at DRTM, thank you for your continued support through 2010. We wish you and your staff the best over the festive season.

Kind regards

C&I Update

Convention Bureau Desk

A very Merry Christmas to all our members and a big thank you from Melissa, Debbie and me, Denise, for all your support during 2010. We look forward to working with you all in 2011.
It has been an amazing year, with some fantastic results that were presented on Tuesday to our members. Thanks again to all those who attended.

The NZ team at the PCO Conference in Hobart

PCO Conference 5-7 December

The conference was held in Hobart, Tasmania. We were there representing Rotorua along with other major MICE destinations from NZ under the 100% PURE banner.
Next year the PCO Conference is being held in Christchurch with a line up of famils and activities pre and post; a great opportunity for NZ to showcase its destinations to the Australian market.

2011

The Bureau will kick off the year at AIME in February with a new campaign that will also run into the domestic market. The campaign is about building awareness of Rotorua using strong imagery, call to action and face to face.

The conference planner has been printed and will be mailed out to our database in early January, so look out for your copy.

Please note the Convention Bureau office will reopen on Monday 10th January 2011.

Media Update

December has seen fewer media famils come through, as you would expect at this time of year. Journalists are stowing their pens and notepads in their wind-down to Christmas, while you tourism operators are girding your loins in preparation for the big holiday rush.

That’s not to say we haven’t had some excellent media here in Rotorua in the past month. You may have seen in the local papers and the DRTM website that we hosted a South American television crew for La Vuelta al Mundo (World Tour). They were in town with TNZ filming geothermal and adventure activities for their show due to air in March. Fronted by two Argentine A-list celebrities, the show is anticipated to attract a viewing audience of more than 8 million. Only Auckland and Rotorua will feature in the New Zealand show, which is one episode in a series of 13.

In the same week, Going Down Under magazine also landed here. This Dutch magazine is circulated throughout the Netherlands to a niche group of people who are highly active considerers for visiting New Zealand and Australia. DRTM supported that visit, which again concentrated on the geothermal angle. We are now patiently waiting for several glossy pages of coverage that are due to appear over the course of next year.

Thanks to all the operators who helped make these two famils memorable. Everything went smoothly and both groups were blown away with Rotorua and everything going on here. And thanks indeed for all your support with famils throughout 2010.

But there’s no rest for the wicked. While the office will be on skeleton staff until 10 January, that first week back is turning into a doozey, with key media from the UK, Germany and China. We will be approaching operators about this over the course of the next week: please treat us kindly - we know it will be your busiest time but any help you can offer will be much appreciated!

And then how can we forget January’s Eves Realty Multisport Festival and the imminent arrival of Mr Armstrong? It’s gearing up to be a media frenzy that we fully intend to make the most of. We’ll be identifying key media and making sure they have a good time in our region – if you are keen to offer your support around this important event, do let us know.
