Kia Ora !*FIRSTNAME*!,

The newly formed Rotorua Tourism Committee (RTC) held its inaugural meeting earlier this week and resolved to commence immediately on a 10-year and 2011/12 Annual Plan.

Over the last few weeks many of you have given us candid feedback on the main issues facing Rotorua tourism. With our goal of restoring Rotorua to a prime destination and hub for domestic and international visitors with higher numbers and better yield (not a modest goal!!), it's critical that the RTC:

  • understand the key issues
  • prioritise our key projects
  • engage the industry and take you with us

The proposal is that we start this process by first inviting your feedback and then asking you to join the Rotorua Tourism Committee on the evening of January 19th between 6pm – 9pm at a venue to be confirmed. The purpose of this meeting will be to raise, debate and identify key issues in a way that allows us to formulate some clear actions and evaluations.  An initial list of these issues can be downloaded here and your feedback prior to and at the meeting is warmly welcomed and invited – particularly in terms of any aspects you feel may have been missed or require further elaboration.

The intention is then to put in place the RVRG (Rotorua Visitor Reference Group) that will consist of a limited number of industry sector representatives, spread across our delivery as a premier visitor destination. We envisage the RVRG having the following roles;

  • to offer views, perspectives and leadership from across industry sectors,
  • to be a conduit from their industry sector on collective goals and aspirations
  • to be a body that informs and advances the strategic responsibilities of the RTC
  • to provide feedback from the industry sectors on achievements and priorities

Unfortunately time is not on our side. Our agenda is dictated in part by the local government planning timetable that requires the Rotorua District Council to have aspects prepared early into the new year (both in terms of the Annual Plan and LTTCP) and the RTC has accepted the fact we need to move quickly and decisively and imbue the decision making process, right or wrong.  This being our reality, I'm pleased to tell you that many industry personalities and leaders have pledged their support to develop a unified tourism strategy including the Rotorua Airport company.

Feel free to send your feedback to us directly at the Rotorua Tourism Committee via our e-mail – if you could also advise us of your availability to attend the meeting on the 19th January (by no later that the 10th January) that would assist us in confirming a suitable venue and resources.

We understand the timing isn’t convenient, but I trust you can appreciate the situation and our responsibility to progress.

Nga mihi nui mo te Kirihimete me te Tau Hou
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
