Rotorua Autumn Fishing Report
As the autumn season takes hold in Rotorua, big trout can be targeted at hot spots like the beaches at Rotoiti, Tarawera and Okataina. Each year from autumn and onwards through winter, the bigger adult trout make their way back to spawning streams. This means shore-based anglers are able to fish for these ‘returning’ trout as they move into the shallows.
While shore-based anglers wait on colder conditions, boaties can also find autumn highly productive. Fish that have been living in deeper, cooler water will soon forage shallower areas where they can be more easily reached by shallow trolling methods like harling. The thermocline is still well formed on Rotoiti and Tarawera, which means that jigging deep or using wire lines will still work well, but expect these methods to become less effective in April and May as the surface temperatures cool and autumn smelting begins over the sandy beaches. This can be a great time to pick up a big trout, as they pack on reserves of energy before spawning.
