Kia Ora,

What a fantastic summer we have enjoyed in Rotorua this year. Many of us have been hosting family and friends over the past few months and showing them around our amazing region, and the weather has really played its part.

As we start to move into autumn, our city is well and truly alive with plenty of events and activities to take part in. Check out the ‘Top 5 Free Things To Do’ in Rotorua section for some great ideas, plus be sure to read through the latest locals’ offers from some of our Rotorua attractions.

Top 5 - Free Things To Do

  1. Kaituna River Walk
Take a walk along the Kaituna river walk to see Okere Falls and watch those daredevil kayakers and rafters make their way over the highest commercially rafted waterfall in the world.

  2. Rotorua Night Market
Every Thursday in the city centre, Rotorua holds a great night market selling everything from food and wine to flowers, art and jewellery.

  3. Whakarewarewa Redwood Forest
Take a walk or mountain bike through this beautiful Rotorua attraction. You can take a trip uphill and get a great panoramic view of the city.

  4. Lakes
Rotorua is surrounded by beautiful lakes. Enjoy a family BBQ, bring the kayaks or simply take a walk around.  The viewing point over the blue and green lakes is a great spot to get a few pictures and marvel at the different colours.

  5. Kuirau Park
Watch boiling mud and steaming pools of water coming from under the earth. Kuirau Park is absolutely free and gives you a good insight into the natural geothermal activity that makes Rotorua famous.

A Locals' Rate for our Local River

This Easter and school holidays, we are offering a locals’ rate on our local river – the Kaituna.

As a Rotorua local you qualify for a 50% discount off our retail rate when you bring with you an out-of- town friend or family member, who is paying full price,.

The Kaituna boasts the highest commercially rafted waterfall (7m) in the world. In fact, there are three waterfalls among the 14 rapids; two smaller waterfalls to practise on before attacking the 7m drop over ‘Tutea Falls’. Talk about white water!

What's New?

Celebrating Buried Village’s 80th Jubilee - Vi’s Teahouse

This year marks 80 years since Reginald and Violet Smith began the development of one of New Zealand’s most visited historic sites, the Buried Village. In the early days as tourists started to arrive, the Te Wairoa Tearooms played an important role, as this is where Vi Smith would serve her famous Devonshire teas. Now 80 years on, the tearooms are as popular as ever and Devonshire teas are still being served.

In memory of Vi Smith and to celebrate the Buried Village’s 80th Jubilee, the Te Wairoa Tearooms have been transformed into Vi’s Teahouse, a Victorian-styled cafe. Along with the famous Devonshire teas the team at Vi’s Teahouse is serving up delicious baked goods, all of which are prepared fresh onsite.
